Revisited: Seeing responsible innovation through a value lens

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the relationship between value and responsible innovation.

The exploration continues!

At the brilliant suggestion of my colleague, Hicham Naim, I’ve reconfigured the framework into a 2x2 matrix (see below).

Why do I love this approach?

  1. It’s still framed in terms of value — which, as mentioned in my previous post, I prefer because it is optimistic and orients teams toward generative, collaborative, and innovative thinking.

  2. It reveals why being overly focused on either protecting value or creating value tends to be suboptimal. The caveat is that special circumstances may call for the ‘suboptimal’ strategies.

  3. It’s actionable!

The other aspect I love about this framework is that it facilitates analysis around value creation along a few useful dimensions. One of these is time scale, i.e., short- vs. long-term value. Another example is value beneficiary, i.e., value for people vs. value for business vs. value for brand. (I suppose you could argue that value for people and brand translate into value for business, but that’s a whole other discussion — perhaps that’s the next post!)

What do you think? Any suggestions or feedback?
